A 72-second vertical documentary essay narrated by Agung Bezharie Hadinegoro. Bali's subak water temples decide who floods their fields and when: neighbours plant together, fields rest together, and the pests starve in between. In 1971 the Green Revolution pushed farmers to plant as often as they could. The pests came, the water ran short, and the farmers fought. Two scientists then modelled 172 farming groups planting at random, each one watching its neighbours. Within ten simulated years they had organised themselves into the temples' schedule. In 1988 control went back to the temples. The film ends on a question for every founder who wants to disrupt something: what was the old system solving?
